Islamic Perspective
On Medicine
|
| The foundation
of this research into the field of Islamic Medicine is based on the famous
hadith-e-halila of the revered Imam Jafar-e-Sadiq a.s. (to be found at www.al-islam.org).
He says that it is virtually impossible for a man to know about the true physiology of human being and the functionality of all the organs individually and as a whole. This complexity is vouched by almost all the modern medical research papers which are perplexed and have no concrete answers to very many questions including as to how does the brain function, the functions of the lymph, the formations of cells, and even why do we have hiccups!! Only the Creator of this being can know its true functionalities. Since nobody can understand this marvellous creation of Allah (s.w.t.) completely, it becomes all the more difficult to understand fully the cause and the cure of the ailments which affect it. But to give a disease without a cure is probably injustice and Allah is Justice Himself. This is why Imam Ali a.s. has said that "Allah (s.w.t.) did not bring a disease to this world without a cure for it". However, since the medicinal plants, herbs, bile from various birds and animals, roots, etc are numerous and there combination in various proportions required for a curing a particular ailment makes the permutations and combinations infinite, thus it is in vain to try to start researching that. Moreover, the geographical spread is also a problem since it brings with it the problem of language, political borders, international politics, travelling, etc and makes the task even more daunting and impossible. We therefore strongly believe that instead of vainly trying to invent the drugs we must re discover the various therapeutic preparations and just mix them in the required proportion and administer to the patient in the desired way. For this we just have to look for the formulas which are mentioned by the Holy Quraan, Prophets and Imams. The precaution to be taken here is that we follow the authentic words of the Prophets and the Imams and are not misled by the numerous unauthentic hadiths and quotations. It is therefore imperative that we research as to the authenticity and reliability of the chain of narrators. However, once we are able to unearth all the knowledge that was given directly from Allah (s.w.t.) the success is Inshallah guaranteed!! Since the hakims, Islamic researchers, surgeons, doctors, and the relevant textual resources (various books, letters, articles, etc) may be scattered across the globe, the collection and research into the subject is itself a huge task and cannot be achieved without the cooperation and duas of one and all. It is for this purpose that we have built this site (www.islamic-medicine.com) to collect information and bring people together to a place where they can interact and share whatever knowledge they have or give their own inputs and comments on the subject of medicine & Islam. But simply decoding a formula for curing a drug is of no use. A look around us will bring us to the fact that it is the English system of harmful and ineffective drugs that we use when we ourselves are ill. Does the book lying in the library of Beirut by Ibn Sina do any good to heal us?? It is thus imperative that all those authentic formulas are tested and commercialized so that people in general can really gain from that knowledge. The profits, if any, from such an activity will, besides making this research model self sustaining, are pledged for the betterment of our community in particular and the society in general.
We beseech each one of you to contribute as much as one can in whatever manner possible for helping take this initiative to its logical end. We know that is not an easy task but Allah (s.w.t.) shows the way for the one who tries. He has said "There is nothing for man except what he has strived for" Holy Quraan (53:39).
